What is a Christian?
A Modern
Affirmation:
We believe in God the Father, infinite in wisdom, power, and love, whose
mercy is over all his works, and whose will is ever directed to his
children's good. We believe in Jesus Christ, son of God and Son of man,
the gift of the Father's unfailing grace, the ground of our hope, and the
promise of our deliverance from sin and death. We believe in the Holy
spirit as the divine presence in our lives, whereby we are kept in
perpetual remembrance of the truth of Christ, and find strength and help
in time of need. We believe that this faith should manifest itself in the
service of love as set forth in the example of our blessed Lord, to the
end that the kingdom of God may come upon the earth.

United Methodist Hymnal, 1989 |

What is a United Methodist?
The
United Methodist Church traces its roots to the early Christian church.
John Wesley is the father of Methodism. Methodism began as a group of
societies within the Anglican church of England. They were called
Methodists because the members observed daily routines of religious
observances and social work. The sources of our faith include the Bible,
Articles of Religion, confession of faith, The United Methodist Book of
Discipline, theologians and educators, and John Wesley's writings.
We share with other Christians: conviction that God has mercy and love for
all people; belief in a triune God--Father, Son and Holy Spirit; faith in
salvation through Jesus Christ; and celebration of the sacraments. We also
share four guidelines for our belief: scripture; tradition; experience;
and reason. |
